Crystal stasis

Crystal Stasis is a dive into the materiality and myth of crystals and the concept of captive beauty. Inspired by Final Fantasy XIII, the project wants to ask the question, “is crystal stasis a distillation of the soul, or is it an imprisonment?”

Over the course of 8 weeks, I grew crystals with monoammonium phosphate, resulting in a dozen of gemstone-like crystals. Along the way, the growing solution produced another type of crystals - dendrons, which are multi-branched, frost-like crystals.

In the end, I made two installations. One with furry wires where I tied objects that best represent my life and being. I let dendron crystals completely grow over them and encapsulate me. Another was a tank with all of the dried crystal byproducts during the entirety of the growth.

While trying to control a material out of my control and obsessing over the speed, shape and quality of crystal growth, I was the one actually taken captive by the material.
